Myriad Games GTS 2010 Report

Will, our official correspondent for Myriad Games Presentations, attended GTS, the GAMA Trade Show in Las Vegas and brought us back this report. For a full audio overview of the show, listen to our latest episode of Game Gab at www.MyriadGames.com/presentations

You can also view the photo album for this event at www.MyriadGames.com/photos

GAMA Trade Show 2010

I had the opportunity and pleasure to attend the GAMA Trade Show this year in Vegas. I was in town for other reasons but was able to sneak away for a few hours to visit the breakfast and exhibit hall. There was a good number of companies showing off upcoming titles and while I was pressed for time I was still able to get to talk to many of them.

Bandai Breakfast

On Wednesday morning Bandai had a breakfast in one of the main conference areas where they presented the current and futures of their collectible card games. Naruto is doing very well and combined with the huge following of the cartoon show, has a lot of leg still left in it. Bandai is going to be working more with game stores to receive exclusive tournament packs and continue expanding on organized play. There are new series of cards coming out and some of the organized play rewards are exclusive cards and play mats.

They also showed off a new CCG called Battle Spirits which is the #1 card game in Japan right now. It has a universe made up of the various elements and decks can be customized based on them. Bandai showed off a short clip of a cartoon/3D TV show that they are shipping around. It was very similar to many of the CCG cartoons with the cartoon characters playing the game and 3D monsters springing to life in the arena. The Battle Spirits starter boxes will contain exclusive cards not in boosters and stores will be receiving a lot of promotional materials to support and grow this new game.

WOTC Breakfast

After the Bandai breakfast, there was a short Wizards of the Coast breakfast. The primary message was that Magic the Gathering had a record year with the new Planeswalker series, the video game properties, and their “Play Magic Friday” events. The president had a great quote “We don’t want a bigger piece of the pie, we want to help make the pie bigger.” They had a few pieces of product on display but more to see at the booth.

Exhibit Hall Booths:

You could feel the excitement at about 10:45 outside the closed doors of the exhibit hall. People were lining up like a black Friday sale at a department store. At 11 the doors flew open and everyone went in with their trusty maps ready to find their favorite manufacturers. Myself included. The hall was pretty big and there were plenty of companies there showing off their current and upcoming lineup. With the limited time I had, I wanted to make sure I could see all the things I wanted to.

AEG

The first booth I went to was AEG. I love these guys. They had on display a bunch of their current games and a few upcoming releases as well as the new miniatures game Dust.

I own and play many of their existing games so I was really interested in the new stuff coming out. Thunderstone has an expansion coming out so I can’t wait for that. And one of the cool things about the expansion besides all the new cards is that the box is smaller but actually configured to hold all the cards from the original and expansion with dividers and nameplate cards! This will really help speed up play and better the storage part of the game. They have a new game coming out called City of Thieves which has each player being the head of a thieves guild trying to get the better of your opponent’s guild by completing quests and thwarting the rival guild. Cool board and minis make this something to watch out for.

They also had a full display for their upcoming Dust game. I had the pleasure to meet the designer of the new AEG Dust game and do a small demo of it.

DUST is a tactical miniatures game in an alternate WW2 universe using plastic pre-assembled (but not pre-painted) miniatures. The miniatures are the exact material as the AT-43 stuff although this new incarnation of DUST is no longer related to AT-43 at all. The models and some of the design aspects though are very similar. Instead of pre-painted miniatures, the dust minis are primed either green or grey for Americans or Germans. The detail is pretty good and even a light dry brush would bring out a lot more detail. The original box will come with a bunch of soldiers, a few walkers and some tiles and dice. Overall my thoughts on the miniatures are that they are pretty nice, definitely cool for some AEWWII stuff but not the most amazing things ever. At Gen Con they are going to have a limited edition with everything pre-painted.

Now let's talk about game play as this is one of the most important parts. So game play is based on square tiles and dice. Instead of units being moved along the table using measuring devices the board is a bunch of squares and units move in a group to adjacent squares based on their movement value. There are terrain tiles and cover tiles etc but it's still square based. LOS is measured by a red dot to red dot in each square so the minis, while in the square, could really be just about anything. The dice system is with custom dice that have splats or blanks. Basically you have your unit sheet with your various weapons and you cross reference the type of weapon you are firing and the target type and it tells you how many dice you roll and how many successes to score a hit. So say an infantry team is shooting at an armor 2 enemy infantry unit, with machine guns it may get 5 dice with every success being 1 would, but against a light armor 2 tank maybe it throws 3 dice and needs 2 successes to be one point of damage. This mechanic is the staple but there are special rules for various teams and weapons. We didn't really get into wound allocation or if it mattered but you take the hits and move on. It's a your team, my team, your team, my team game like AT-43 so it can matter which square you activate in which order. You can build your army but there really isn't much in the way of points, you just say ok 3 units of level 2 infantry and 2 mechs a side without too much in the way of absolute balance.

They have the first expansion already planned with artillery, command groups, snipers etc and have the next year and a half planned for models and releases including scenarios, mutant zombie Nazis, spec ops us etc. Very AEWWII stuff that would fit in with any of the myriad of rule sets out there.

Reaper Miniatures

I didn’t spend much time at the Reaper booth as we all know and love their RPG models. The stuff they come out with is fantastic. Their line of pre-painted RPG plastic Legend line is growing and seems to be doing very well.

Catalyst

While Catalyst has been around for a while with their Battletech and Shadowrun line, I was mostly interested in their new alternate history airship game Leviathan. I have played the starter games with the web based PDFs and am anxiously awaiting this game to come out. I spoke with one of the designers on the project and he said the web response was awesome. They are still debating the various methods of release, whether there will be a rule book with tokens, a box set with the minis, downloadable versions like the PDFs etc. The Shadowrun 20th Anniversary edition has been doing well and their Battletech stuff is always popular. We talked a little bit about Cthulhu tech which sounded pretty interesting but pretty deep as well.

Collins Epic Wargames

I got to sit down and play a demo game of Spearpoint 1943 Frontline General Card Game. It was a blast and already looking forward to it. It’s got a cool deck building system where you agree to a point cost and create your deck with units, artillery, tanks and other things. Then you play through the various phases and there is a joint command and damage deck. Using D10s (I think it was a D10) each side takes turn activating a unit and attacking the front line or bombarding from the rear line. All in all a very fun, fast card game. They also had some very detailed wargames / boardgames and campaign rules for other systems.

Conquest Gaming LLC

Conquest has a newly released boardgame called Warlords of Europe. It’s an area control game based in what appears to be feudal Europe. The components were fantastic and the game has some really cool mechanics that help the game scale for more or less people (basically the size of the map shrinks) and also what all area control games require … a time mechanic so that it ends. Definitely a winner if you like those types of games.

Chivalry Games

When I walked by the Chaostle booth I was immediately drawn towards miniature dragons and unicorns, heroes and square boards with 3D walls. I mean whatever type of game it is, with those things it has to rock right!? Learning more about the game though and this sounds like a blast with the right group. It’s almost like a ultimate race game where you build a band of fantasy characters, and each side is trying to race around the board and invade the castle. Sounds simple right? Here’s the twist. Each side has a color and a starting area and you go in the opposite direction of your opponent. So now you have to get your guys past the enemy while he is trying to get past you. Heroes have special abilities, can level up and you can get some crazy combos going not to mention the 3D board for flying or jumping over spaces. This gets even more awesome as all 8 players are being used. Now you have 7 other teams going in the same direction or opposite direction of you and everyone is going to clash everywhere while trying to get to the middle to win. While this won’t replace your RPG adventure boardgame, for a fun, very thematic, large group boardgame this is going to be a blast. They will also be releasing new heroes with miniatures and even a metal set. Keep an eye out for this one.

Flying Frog Productions

From the guys who brought you Last Night on Earth and a Touch of Evil. Fun games with great photo art style. This year they are releasing two games: Conquest of Planet Earth and Invasion from Outer Space. Invasion from Outer Space is a game in the same line as the Last Night on Earth games. This time it is up to some carnival folk to prevent the Martians from taking over the world! The art style uses their brilliant full photo cast and there are even rules to implement both LNOE and IFOS into a single game. The next game they will be releasing is Conquest of Planet Earth. This game is a bit different both in play and art. They will be using all drawn art assets in this one and it’s about a group of aliens all trying to take over the earth. There are 9 square boards and cards that are flipped over to explore with the goal of being the winning alien race to take over the planet. Can’t wait!

Academy Games

I stopped by briefly at the Academy Games booth as they were showing off Conflict of Heroes – Awakening the Bear. It’s a fantastic game and now they have Conflict of Heroes - Storms of Steel with lots of TANKS! Can’t wait to get my hands on this one.

Moosetache Games

I got to play a demo game of Rowboat from Moosetache games (Yes it’s a moose with a mustache). It’s a great tricks strategy card game, uses some cool stuff like "the tide" and “nobs” but the main idea is to make tricks and score. However there’s a cool balance factor where if you bid too much or too little you can get burned in the long term so there’s careful planning of how much to bid, and how to actually play out your hands. Great nautical themed cards too. They were giving brochures for Pirate King board game at their booth since the owner wasn't there but didn’t find out any more information about it.

Petroglyph

I wanted to spend some time at the Petroglyph booth but didn’t have enough time. These guys make Panzer General the board game along with the Xbox version by Ubisoft. They have a new one coming out both on XBLA and board game called Russian Assault. Looks to be similar, just in a different theatre of operations. I was really interested in finding out more information about Guardians of Graxia which is a fantasy based one that will also be available on the PC.

Wyrd Miniatures

If you aren’t playing Malifaux by Wyrd Miniatures better smack yourself in the mirror. What a unique and great game. The models are amazing and while talking with them at the booth they said the next book should be out at Gen Con including a new master for each faction and another full set of models to come. From a retailer point of view, they are now supplied by pretty much every major distributor so should see more and more places having them and more and more people playing it.

Pulp Gamer

While there as an official correspondent for Myriad Games I saw that there were other people from the Pulp Gamer media group there. It was very interesting to note though that when I would mention either Pulp Gamer, Myriad Games, T6G or any of the other podcasts most of the response I got was a blank stare. It was just as interesting to realize that while some of the people had heard of BGG or TGN they weren’t doing anything to increase their own presence on sites like that or even have news feeds and updates. Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, gaming sites, all these things exist and are followed obsessively by the fans and it’s amazing how many companies don’t take advantage of their built in fan base by using these things.

Smirk and Dagger

Smirk and Dagger is releasing a Hex Hex XL with the originals and a few more pieces for varied gameplay. Also they had their Cutthroat Caverns which is a great game as well as their new fun themed Candyland/Shootin Ladders games.

Uber Goober games

Uber Goober games had just a small booth but I spoke to the guy about their Undead States of America - Zombie Campaign system and it sounds fantastic. They have worked with Rebel Minis to make a great box set that goes with the rules as well. The campaign system is great, it truly is a miniatures wargame with a campaign system built into it. You can track the spread of the zombie infestation across the country and the minis when all painted up on the table look fantastic.

GHQ

I spoke to the GHQ guys and the quality of their miniatures is out of this world. I begged them to do some Sci-Fi but they have enough on their plate with WW2, Age of Sail and Modern. The minis are fantastic and very well priced. They even have their own line of paints and hex terrain boards and terrain making stuff.

Flames of War/Gale Force 9/Wargames Illustrated had a huge booth

Battlefront miniatures had a very nice setup there. It was for Flames of War, Gale Force 9 and Wargames Illustrated. Love all the products of course. There is some new GF9 prepainted terrain coming out that looks great and is very affordable. The gentleman at the booth said he never wants it to be whether to buy a building or buy a new unit but instead the buildings and bridges and everything are inexpensive enough but look great enough that you can concentrate on the hobby and gaming. They are also releasing a new board game and campaign set. Kind of like the first one but instead of one box with everything in it, splitting it into a real board game and then a separate campaign system for FoW.

Ex Illis

Spent a few minutes at the Ex Illis booth. As a participant in the beta it was amazing to see some of the improvements to the software. I’ve always loved their models and their new siege engine box set and new heroes coming out look amazing. The person I spoke with said that now that the experience point system and model level up features were in, the feedback has been very positive.

Vallejo Paints

Vallejo had a nice booth with of course their fantastic paints.

Darkson Designs

At the Vallejo booth they were showing off a new Sci Fi Skirmish bounty hunter game called AE Bounty. It was going to have multiple factions, multiple alien races, along with miniatures to support the line.

Gorilla Games

At Gorilla Games they had a fun little party game called Who would Win. Each player takes a name and then you flip over an event and you have to argue who would win the event. The rest of the room votes and you score based on that. I could see this being very fun with the right people. I got Marie Curie and he got Lassie and the “who would win… horseshoes!”. Well obviously Lassie is very smart but come on, Marie Curie has opposable thumbs!! I got the win although probably because they were just being nice to me. Definitely a fun party game.

Chubby Hubby Undies

Swear to god funniest thing there :) For large gaming husbands who want comfortable underwear!

WOTC Booth – Amazing

After the breakfast meeting I was excited about seeing the WOTC booth. While Magic is a huge property they are making big pushes this year with the D&D property. With multiple new books and settings coming out, along with 2 co-op boardgames and the Heroscape tie in, they are expanding their business to find new players. D&D Insider is getting a good overhaul and one of the biggest things they have seen is new players get overwhelmed with what they see when they go to a Barnes and Noble or game store so they are recreating a “Red Box” which will have everything you need to start off.

Overall Thoughts

Unfortunately my time at the exhibit hall was cut short. There were plenty of other games I didn’t get to see, and vendors selling everything from dice to counter items to energy drinks. I’m excited to see a lot of these games come to market and interested in what the next year of gaming holds for us.
